Migrant Health Programs Summer Internship

Main Objective:  Support Migrant Health Programs Outreach and Engagement Initiatives in the Northeast Kingdom.   

Description of Role:   Intern will support ongoing outreach and engagement activities led by Migrant Health Programs’ NEK Community Health Worker. 

  • Provide leadership to evaluate and improve the food box/CSA delivery program in the NEK while supporting ongoing outreach
    • Interview farmworker households about their experiences participating in the project and opportunities for improvement
    • Create or update lists of preferred food items per household
    • Deliver CSAs to Northern Orleans County when regular volunteers are not available.
  • Collaborate with community partners to support kitchen gardens at farmworker housing.
  • Transport clients in the region to health appointments at local community health centers and hospitals.
  • Support the Community Health Worker to deliver oral health education class to interested farmworkers.

Qualifications: Strong oral and written Spanish language skills required. Must possess time management, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience working with diverse audiences including im/migrant populations preferred. 

Physical Demands & Work Conditions: Frequent travel throughout the Northeast Kingdom. This job requires visiting a variety of homes and businesses including farms. There is exposure to agricultural environments. Lifting not to exceed 50 pounds.

Orientation and Supervision: The intern will learn about community based outreach within the migrant farmworker community and improve their understanding of the history and current context of the relationship between immigration policy and migrant workers in Vermont and the United States. Trainings will include an overview of projects and initiatives within Migrant Health Programs, establishing relationship and creating boundaries and safety of community workers. Guided readings will focus on immigrant workers in the dairy industry and food security among farmworkers. Intern will be supervised by the Migrant Health Programs lead and work in close coordination with the NEK Community Health Worker. 

Dates of Internship:  June 3, 2024- July 27, 2024

Hours: 20 per week (M-F). Schedule will be determined in partnership with final candidate

Pay: $18/hour

Housing: Free housing is provided in a shared residence at Sterling College in nearby Craftsbury, VT 

Transportation: This position requires regular access to a reliable insured vehicle. Mileage will be reimbursed from Sterling College at the federal rate. 

Cohort Model: The intern hired for this position will be part of a UVM-sponsored cohort of interns working with a range of organizations in the Northeast Kingdom who are supporting Community Resilience.  The position includes participation in a week-long community orientation along with 6-8 other UVM interns placed in partner organizations and weekly intern cohort workshops for professional development, networking, and reflection and a final sharing event on Wednesday, July 24 from 12-3pm.  Questions about the cohort?
