Marketing & Community Development Intern

About Us:

Working Fields is a mission-driven staffing agency. We connect anyone who wants to work with local job opportunities and peer coaching. This support model enables employers to recruit from a larger, more diverse talent pool.
We aim to address systemic barriers to employment in our communities — such as transportation, childcare, justice system involvement, and substance use disorder — and build inclusive workplaces.
We are driven by our values: Honesty and Humility, Stability, Equity in Action, Gratitude, and Love. Founded by an individual with lived experience of incarceration and recovery, we are deeply committed to dismantling systems of injustice and encourage people from marginalized communities to apply.

About the Internship:

During this internship, you’ll get hands-on experience in various marketing projects as we continue to build our presence in central Vermont. You’ll lead outreach efforts – from giving presentations to planning events – and network with service agencies, government departments, nonprofits, and local businesses.
This role is part-time with a mix of in-person and remote work. You can shape your own hours to suit your schedule. In-person work includes collaborative work with our Marketing Director at our Burlington office, and direct outreach work in central Vermont (ex. Barre, Montpelier, Hyde Park).

Internship Details:

You will be responsible for creating and executing an outreach strategy that increases our impact in central Vermont. You’ll work closely with the Marketing Director to identify prospects, plan projects, create content and measure success.
A typical day during this internship would include a mix of office and field work. For example, you might help plan a zero-barrier job fair at a local laundromat, featuring free laundry for attendees. Your day could include designing a poster for the event, promoting the event online, and then making an in-person trip to local service partners to help promote the event.
Here are examples of potential projects:
-       Plan and promote a local job fair
-       Plan and promote a large summer event (ex. Community fair ft. local service agencies)
-       Identify new partners and deliver introductory presentation
-       Create and deliver informational presentations (ex. For employers - why you should update your background check process)
-       Write an educational blog post (ex. How stigma impacts jobseekers)
-       Design and write social media posts
We encourage you to bring creative outreach ideas to this internship and welcome your project goals.

What You’ll Learn:

You will gain deep knowledge of Vermont’s communities, systems, challenges, and resources. You’ll be exposed to work in critical fields such as fair chance hiring, recovery-friendly workplaces, and collaboration across public and private sectors.
You will also get to develop strong marketing skills, including writing, design, event planning, presenting, digital marketing, and project management.

Qualifications:

Interns from all majors and backgrounds are welcome. We prefer that you have your own vehicle available to conduct outreach in central VT.
For applicants with a focus on social work: please indicate whether you would like to spend part of the program working directly with our jobseekers.
Helpful skills:
-       A belief in second chances for all individuals
-       Comfortable presenting to new people
-       Experience with writing in various formats
-       Ability to work independently
