Multicultural Community Center Intern

Organization: ECDC Vermont – Multicultural Community Center (MCC)
Location: Brattleboro, Vermont
Anticipated Start Date: June 1, 2026
Duration: 10 weeks
Hours: 15 hours per week
Compensation: $4,000 stipend (funded through UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships)
Reports To: MCC Manager

Overview

ECDC Vermont’s Multicultural Community Center (MCC) seeks a motivated and community-oriented intern to support programs that serve refugees and other New Americans in the Brattleboro community. This internship is part of a cohort of University of Vermont (UVM) summer interns working with local organizations in partnership with the School for International Training (SIT).

Interns will gain hands-on experience contributing to community engagement, cultural programming, and operations at the MCC. This role is ideal for students interested in nonprofit work, community development, international studies, social justice, or education.

Internship Structure (20 hours/week)

  • 15 hours/week: Primary internship responsibilities at MCC 
  • 2 hours/week: Collaborative work with intern cohort supporting ESL and program activities 
  • 3 hours/week: Professional development workshops, reflection sessions, and cohort activities 

Housing is provided at the SIT campus in Brattleboro.

 

Learning Outcomes

Through this internship, the intern will:

  • Gain hands-on experience in community-based programming and nonprofit operations 
  • Develop intercultural communication and engagement skills 
  • Build experience supporting events, outreach, and volunteer coordination 
  • Strengthen organizational, communication, and professional skills 
  • Learn how community centers support integration and belonging for New Americans 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Community Research: Identify and compile information about local community hubs, cultural organizations, and potential partners for collaboration 
  • Event Support: Assist the Center Manager in planning, organizing, and facilitating cultural and educational events 
  • Volunteer Outreach: Help develop and maintain systems for volunteer recruitment, onboarding, and engagement 
  • Operational Support: Contribute to daily administrative and program activities, including communications, record keeping, and welcoming visitors 

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Coursework in education, nonprofit management, international studies, or a related field 
  • Authorization to work in the United States 

Preferred

  • Experience in community engagement, event planning, or volunteer coordination 
  • Experience working with diverse or multicultural communities 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills 
  • Ability to take initiative and work collaboratively 
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice, equity, and cross-cultural engagement
